Fort Irwin is home to the National Training Center which is a major training center for the United States Military and is part of the Installation Management Command. The 11the Armored Cavalry Regiment is stationed at Fort Irwin to provide enemy forces to units to train against at Fort Irwin. San Bernardino County in California is where Fort Irwin is located bordered by the Mojave Desert. Housing at Fort Irwin is provided with over 2,000 family housing units which include duplexes, triplexes, and fourplexes. Most of the residences have a master bedroom and fenced backyard. The newer homes have two car garages and granite countertops. The waiting list of on-post housing can be is typically from 30 to 45 days. Off-post housing can be discussed with the housing office and nearby Barstow offers homes for rent and sale. Applicable BAH rates will apply to off-post housing depending on rank. Temporary lodging is provided by the Landmark which has units that include a refrigerator, free wireless internet, and a microwave. There are no other temporary accommodations between Fort Irwin and Barstow. The Landmark Inn can be contacted for reservations at 760-386-4040.
The California school system will require proof of immunizations before enrolling any student. Kindergarten students must be at least five years of age by the school cutoff date and have had a full physical. Copy of birth certificates and social security numbers are also required to complete registration. Family Child Care provides day care at certified homes on post. Full day, part day or weekend and extra care can be arranged for those living in on-post housing. Before and After Kindergarten program is available for children from 6 weeks to 5 years. Children must be registered with the Child Development Center prior to attending.
