    • Fort Irwin on-post housing is privatized and operated by The Villages at Fort Irwin (760) 386-4663, which offers 2-4 bedroom single family homes based on family size and pay grade. Home amenities may include: fenced backyards, two car garage, built in pantry and granite counter-tops. The community features a swimming pool, fitness center, baseball field and more.

    Barstow is the biggest city near Fort Irwin with a population of 23,000. There are other communities around but "close" is a relative term; since Irwin is in such a remote location, the average commute here is a bit further than many other parts of the country. Towns within an hour's drive include Hinkley, Yermo, Helendale, Victorville, and Hesperia. 

    Other major cities nearby are San Bernardino, about 1.5 hours south of post, and Los Angeles, about 3 hours to the southwest. Fort Irwin is in southeastern California near the border with Nevada; Las Vegas is about 2 hours 45 minutes northeast of Irwin.
